Clearing the Energy, Restoring the Warmth

Lately, people have been asking me a lot:“What can you do for house protection?”“How do I get rid of that heavy or uncomfortable feeling in my home?”
My honest answer is — so much. There are many ways to clear stagnant or unwanted energy and replace it with something warmer, calmer, and more supportive.
Our homes hold energy. Every emotion, conversation, visitor, stressful day, illness, grief, or
big life change leaves an imprint. Sometimes that energy feels nurturing and safe. Other times it feels flat, unsettled, or just off. Most people don’t need labels — they simply know when their space doesn’t feel right anymore.
Home cleansing isn’t about fear or drama. It’s about movement, balance, and intention.
Cleansing Tools: There’s More Than One Way
Most people are familiar with White Sage and Palo Santo, and yes — they work well. But they’re only part of the picture.
Smoke, Scent & Intention
Incense is often overlooked, yet it’s one of the oldest cleansing tools we have. Churches have used it for centuries — not by accident. Frankincense, Myrrh, Sandalwood, or even a simple incense stick carries intention through scent and smoke, helping to bless and shift a space.
Plants as Protection
Plants have always been energetic guardians:
Rosemary is one of the oldest protection plants. Witches of old used it around doorways, hearths, and beds to ward, protect, and clear.
Aloe Vera absorbs negative energy and helps maintain calm, balanced spaces. It’s especially good near entrances or shared living areas.
Salt: Simple, Grounding, Powerful
Never underestimate salt. It has been used across cultures for purification and protection for generations. Bowls of salt, salt added to wash water, or salt placed near doors helps ground and stabilise energy.
Water & Moon Water
Water has always been sacred. Cultures all over the world use it for cleansing and renewal. Here is NZ the Maori use water to bless sacred carvings, Pounamu etc as well as cleansing when we leave the Urupa (cemetery). Moon Water — water charged under the moon — adds softness and intention. It can be used to mist rooms, wipe doorways, or simply sit quietly in a space that needs calming.
Crystals Beyond the Basics
We all know Clear Quartz and Black Tourmaline, but they’re not the only helpful ones:
Amethyst – calming, protective, and soothing
Selenite – high-vibration cleansing and ongoing clarity
Smoky Quartz – grounding and gently shifting heavy energy
Obsidian – strong protection and boundaries
Labradorite – energetic shielding and strengthening
You don’t need lots. One or two placed with intention is enough.
Energy Practices & Sound Clearing
Energy practices, including Reiki, are incredibly effective for clearing spaces. They work gently, respectfully, and deeply — restoring balance rather than forcing anything out.
Sound is another powerful clearing tool. It breaks up stagnant energy and gets things moving again. This can include:
Crystal singing bowls
Brass bowls
Bells
Clapping
Your voice
Ever noticed how, when you’re cleaning the house, the music gets turned up and you start dancing around with a broom or vacuum? That’s not random. You’re instinctively using sound, movement, and joy to lift the energy. We’ve always known how to do this — we just forgot we knew.
The Part People Forget (But It Truly Matters)
This is something I talk about often at markets and in Reiki courses — because it’s important.
When you cleanse a home, you must open the space fully.
That means:
Opening all doors and windows
Opening cupboards and wardrobes
And if it feels right, drawers too
Energy behaves a lot like dust — it settles into corners and hidden spaces. When things stay closed, energy can linger. Opening everything allows light, air, sound, and intention to move through properly. Nothing gets trapped. Nothing gets left behind.
And just as important — finish the physical clean properly.
If you’ve vacuumed, swept, or cleaned with intention:
Empty the vacuum
Take rubbish outside to the bin
Do not leave bags in spare rooms, cupboards, garages, or drawers
Why do all that clearing only to store it inside the house? Why waste the work you’ve done by leaving it in a room — or worse, dumping it in a kitchen drawer so it comes straight back into the heart of the home?
There’s a reason people used to sweep things out of their homes with a broom. It wasn’t just about dirt. It was about release. Completion. Letting things leave fully.
A Simple Home Cleansing Ritual
You don’t need everything — choose what feels right.
You may use:
Incense, sage, or Palo Santo
A bowl of salt or moon water
A crystal (optional)
Music, a bowl, clapping, or sound
The Ritual:
Open the home fully.
Ground yourself and set an intention.
Cleanse room by room using smoke, sound, or clapping — especially corners and doorways.
Use salt or moon water at entrances or key spaces.
Place crystals if using them.
Turn on music, move, seal the space with joy.
Take rubbish outside. Completion matters.
Common Mistakes People Make
Cleansing with everything shut
Clearing energy but not finishing the physical clean
Using tools without intention
Thinking there’s only one “right” way
There isn’t.
A Final Reminder
Home cleansing is not about fear. It’s about awareness, intention, and care.
When you clear properly — and allow energy to fully leave — what remains is balance.
And that’s where the magic really is 🌙✨
